Peace Rally Wolfville, March 18, 2006
Posted March 19th, 2006 by andy
- While the media was focusing on the Gomery inquiry, the “peace-keeping” mission of our Canadian troops was apparently changed to a “Hunt down and Kill” project. The question raised everywhere in Canada and at this rally: “Just how Canadian does 'Hunt and Kill' (Humans) sound?”.
- Wolfville Town Council passed a resolution making Wolfville a ‘nuclear weapons free zone’ in the 80s.
- Peace vigils have been taking place at the post office (Wolfville’s federal building) for decades. Currently, the peace vigil has been going every Saturday since October 14, 2001, the first Saturday after the invasion of Afghanistan.
- Wolfville has a mediation group (Peace Makers) established in the 90s which helps resolve conflicts of all kinds around the Maritimes.
- Wolfville Town Council adopted a resolution making Wolfville an official ‘Peaceful Community’ (2003).
- Mayor Robert Stead is an official member of the global Mayor’s for Peace initiative (2005).
- Hundreds of communities worldwide have been participating in this peace event.
The whole crowd then went marching in the downtown Wolfville area, singing, drumming and waving peace flags and signs (see videos).

...the longest journey begins with only one step.
To the Peace movement of Wolfville: I was beginning to worry about you guys. I thought maybe you were all languishing in Wolfville Jailhouse. Following the aftermath of the storming of the Post Office that is. {the Irish Republic started out that way in Dublin GPO - no one thought that one would succeed either!!! Well done guys. I remember many peace rallys in Ireland/england over the years - maybe a quarter million people in Hyde park on one day. But no more important in the pan peace process than the one you guys all 84 of you including the invisible Saoirse Kelly aged 10 of Dundalk Co. Louth Ireland. I'll put the rally photos on my blog and a link to the peace vidz.
